A Smile Restored: Full-Mouth Bridge Rehabilitation for a Medically Complex Patient

At High Mountain Dentistry in North Haledon, NJ, we believe every patient deserves a healthy, functional smile — regardless of the challenges they face. The following case illustrates what compassionate, comprehensive dental care can accomplish, even in the most complex of circumstances.

Meet “Bill”

“Bill” is a 60-year-old man living with Parkinson’s disease who also suffered a stroke, leaving him with significantly limited mobility and dexterity. When he first came to our office, even getting him safely from his wheelchair to the dental chair presented a challenge. But our team was committed to meeting him where he was — and doing whatever it took to help.

The Clinical Picture

A comprehensive exam and full-mouth X-rays told a clear story: significant decay throughout, compounded by years of difficulty maintaining oral hygiene due to Bill’s condition. Given the complexity of his medical history, we coordinated with an oral surgeon to safely perform three extractions before proceeding with restorative treatment.

What followed was a lengthy and meticulous restorative appointment: all decay was removed, core buildups were placed to strengthen the remaining teeth, and a 10-tooth temporary bridge was fabricated to protect and stabilize his smile while the permanent restoration was being crafted.

Navigating Setbacks

Bill’s journey wasn’t without hurdles. Medical setbacks along the way required the removal of an additional tooth, extending the timeline of treatment. Through it all, our team stayed the course — adjusting the treatment plan as needed and keeping both Bill and his caregivers informed and supported every step of the way.

The Finished Result

Once the permanent bridgework was inserted and all gum line margins were sealed, the transformation was remarkable. We also took time to educate Bill’s caregivers on maintaining his oral health going forward — emphasizing the use of an electric toothbrush and a Waterpik to make daily hygiene as manageable as possible.
Bill and his family were overjoyed with the outcome. For our team, cases like this are a reminder of why we do what we do.
